In this guide

TEREA Japan vs Indonesia is not a stronger versus a weaker copy of one stick: they are two separate ranges made for two markets. In our shop only Sun Pearl and Oasis Pearl share a name, and IQOS describes even those differently. At the time of writing, a Japanese box costs AED 230 and an Indonesian box from AED 120.

Below we put the official descriptions side by side, match the closest menthol counterparts and work out the price per stick. We have not run a blind tasting, so every taste note here comes from IQOS Japan or IQOS Indonesia, as published in November 2026.

Same name, different description: the two Pearls

Sun Pearl

This is the clearest example of one name covering two different products. The IQOS Japan Sun Pearl page describes a refreshing menthol stick, and crushing the capsule spreads a fresh watermelon aroma through it. The IQOS Indonesia Sun Pearl page describes a tobacco blend with a subtle spice aroma, and one click adds fresh exotic fruit.

Sun Pearl Japan Indonesia
Before the click Cool menthol Natural tobacco with a subtle spice aroma
After the click Watermelon through the menthol Cooling menthol with exotic fruit
Official scale Strength 4, menthol 4 (out of 5) Not published

In practice, the Japanese version is described as cool from the first puff with a named fruit, while the Indonesian version is described as tobacco first and cool after the click.

Oasis Pearl

Both markets describe Oasis Pearl as menthol before the click. IQOS Japan says the capsule releases a rich passion fruit aroma over refreshing menthol and rates it strength 3 and menthol 4, one step milder in strength than Japanese Sun Pearl. IQOS Indonesia describes natural tobacco with a cool menthol sensation and fresh tropical fruit after one click, without naming the fruit.

A third description exists too. Our Oasis Pearl flavour page quotes the international version, which starts as creamy, nutty tobacco before the click. Each market writes its own notes, so always read the description for the version you buy.

Japanese vs Indonesian menthol TEREA

IQOS publishes no official equivalents between the two ranges. The pairs below are matched only by their official taste descriptions, so treat them as the nearest neighbours, not as the same blend.

Japanese flavour Closest Indonesian flavour What differs
Black Menthol: piercing, ice-cold menthol with a faint green-fruit note (menthol 5 of 5) Black Green: intense, frosty menthol with a green-fruit aroma (“Intense & Frosty”) Both are the coldest in their range; only Japan publishes a number
Purple Menthol: refreshing menthol led by a rich blueberry aroma (strength 4, aroma 5) Purple Wave: cool menthol with a dark forest-fruit aroma (“Rich & Satisfying”) Japan names blueberry; Indonesia says dark forest fruit
Menthol: deep menthol chill with peppermint and creamy notes (strength 3) Blue Wave: deep menthol cooling with peppermint and a creamy aroma Almost the same wording; Japan rates it mid-strength
Mint: balanced mint freshness with the taste of tobacco (strength 3, menthol 3) Green: balanced menthol with a spearmint aroma (tagged “Balanced & Cooling” in Indonesia) Both sit at the balanced end of their range
Bright Menthol: refreshing menthol lifted by a fresh pear aroma Bright Wave: menthol cooling from fresh-smelling green fruit (“Smooth & Refreshing”) Japan names pear; Indonesia names green fruit

Three notes on the table. Our Blue Wave is matched to IQOS Indonesia’s TEREA Blue description, because iqos.com/id lists no product named Blue Wave. And Japan currently shows no strength value for Bright Menthol, only body, aroma and menthol. Finally, the Indonesian tags we quote come from each flavour’s own pack page; the IQOS Indonesia range listing shows different tags for some, such as “Strong & Satisfying” for Purple Wave.

Several Japanese menthols have no Indonesian counterpart in our shop at all: Black Purple Menthol, Black Ruby Menthol, Black Yellow Menthol, Black Sunshine Menthol, Yellow Menthol, Tropical Menthol and Fusion Menthol. On the Indonesian side, Yugen, a fruity and floral blend with a fresh, cooling feel, has no Japanese twin.

Tobacco flavours: no direct pairs

For plain tobacco the two ranges barely overlap. Japan has the Regular line, from Balanced Regular (strength 3) to Rich Regular (strength 5). Indonesia has Sienna, Bronze, the clove-scented Golden Edition and the creamy Dimensions blend Apricity.

  • If you like Japanese Smooth Regular (toasty tobacco with black-tea and woody hints), the nearest is Sienna, tagged “Balance & Woody” on its IQOS Indonesia pack page and described internationally as woody with a hint of tea.
  • If you like Japanese Rich Regular (heavy, malty tobacco), the nearest is Bronze, tagged “Rich & Warm” in Indonesia and described internationally as full, with cocoa and dried-fruit aromas.
  • Golden Edition and Apricity have no Japanese equivalent; they are Indonesian specialities.

Price per stick at the time of writing

Both versions come in boxes of 10 packs with 20 sticks each, so the maths is simple. At our November 2026 prices, a Japanese box works out at about AED 1.15 per stick (AED 23 per pack) and an Indonesian box at about AED 0.60 per stick (AED 12 per pack), or about AED 0.63 for the AED 125 Pearl boxes. The Japanese box costs AED 110 more than a non-Pearl Indonesian box, or roughly 92% more. Prices change, so check today’s TEREA prices in Dubai before you compare.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose Japan if you want a named fruit (watermelon, passion fruit, blueberry, pear), the ice-cold Black line, the Regular tobacco line, or an official 1-5 scale to compare flavours.
  • Choose Indonesia if price per stick matters most, if you want Golden Edition or the Dimensions blends, or if you prefer a Sun Pearl that starts as tobacco.
  • Not sure? Pick the same family in both, for example Black Menthol and Black Green, and compare them over a few days.

Frequently asked questions

Is Japanese TEREA stronger than Indonesian TEREA?

There is no official cross-market comparison. IQOS Japan publishes a 1-5 strength scale, while IQOS Indonesia only uses short taste tags. What the numbers do show is a wide spread inside one range: in the Japanese line-up alone, Balanced Regular is rated 3 and Rich Regular 5.

Do Japanese and Indonesian TEREA work in the same device?

Yes. Both are standard TEREA sticks and work in every IQOS ILUMA and ILUMA i device, whichever country the device came from.

Which Indonesian TEREA is closest to Japanese Black Menthol?

By the official descriptions, Black Green. IQOS Indonesia tags it “Intense & Frosty”, with a green-fruit aroma, which is close to the Japanese description of piercing, ice-cold menthol with a faint green-fruit note.

Is Japanese Sun Pearl the same as Indonesian Sun Pearl?

Not according to IQOS. Japan describes menthol from the start and watermelon after the click. Indonesia describes tobacco with a subtle spice aroma first and menthol with exotic fruit after the click.

For adults 18+ only. Tobacco and nicotine products are addictive and not risk free.
