What is TEREA: IQOS ILUMA i with TEREA packs and sticks
In this guide

TEREA is the tobacco stick Philip Morris International makes for IQOS ILUMA and ILUMA i devices. Each stick has a stainless-steel element sealed inside, and the device heats the tobacco from within by induction instead of lighting it. TEREA works only in ILUMA-generation devices, and one pack holds 20 sticks.

If you searched “what is TEREA” after seeing the packs in a Dubai shop, this guide covers what is inside a stick, how one session works, the flavour families, the seven country versions you will see in Dubai and how to choose your first box in the UAE. Where IQOS publishes a figure, we quote it and link the official page.

What is TEREA, in plain terms?

TEREA is a brand of heated tobacco sticks, not a device. You need an IQOS ILUMA or ILUMA i device to use it, in the same way a coffee capsule only works in its own machine. In user guides and on the official site, IQOS also calls the sticks SMARTCORE STICKS.

A TEREA stick looks like a short cigarette, but you never light it. You push it into the device, the device heats the tobacco for one session, and then you throw the stick away. IQOS UK states that TEREA sticks are single-use only, so a used stick cannot go back in for a second session.

The older IQOS devices, such as IQOS 3 DUO and IQOS ORIGINALS, use a different stick called HEETS and heat it with a blade. TEREA and HEETS are not interchangeable in either direction. Our TEREA device compatibility guide lists every model on both sides of that line.

How a TEREA stick works

What is inside the stick

According to IQOS UK (What are TEREA tobacco sticks?, checked November 2026), each stick has four parts: a tobacco plug, a filter, a cooling plug and a protective wrap. A metal heating element made of stainless steel sits inside the tobacco, and the stick is sealed on both ends, so no loose tobacco falls into the device.

The official IQOS UAE TEREA page adds two practical warnings. Do not use TEREA in older blade devices, because it may damage the blade. Do not take a stick apart or swallow it, because it contains a sharp metal part.

How the device heats it

ILUMA devices have no blade. IQOS calls its system the SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEM: the device warms the metal element by induction, and the element heats the tobacco from the inside. Because nothing pierces the tobacco, there is no blade to clean or break.

A normal session on an ILUMA i device runs like this, based on the IQOS UAE first-steps guide and the IQOS comparison and TEREA pages:

  1. Insert the stick up to the line on the filter. The device vibrates and starts preheating automatically.
  2. Preheating takes about 20 seconds on ILUMA i and ILUMA i PRIME, according to the IQOS UAE comparison page.
  3. A second vibration tells you the stick is ready to use.
  4. One session lasts up to 6 minutes or 14 puffs, whichever comes first. IQOS Egypt notes that the FlexPuff feature can add 4 puffs, still within the 6 minutes.
  5. Take the stick out and throw it away. The next stick starts a new session.

The device also tells you when a session is nearly over. IQOS UAE’s ILUMA guide says two more vibrations mean about 30 seconds or 2 puffs are left, and the ILUMA i ONE guide describes a vibration with a flashing light for the same warning.

How many sessions you get before recharging depends on the model. IQOS lists up to 3 consecutive uses for ILUMA i and ILUMA i PRIME, and up to 20 back-to-back for ILUMA i ONE, with about 20 sessions per full charge on all three.

How TEREA differs from a cigarette and a vape

People often ask whether TEREA is a vape. It is not: a TEREA stick contains real tobacco, and the ILUMA device heats it without lighting it. A vape heats a nicotine liquid, and a cigarette burns tobacco. In daily use the differences look like this:

Point TEREA in IQOS ILUMA Cigarette Disposable vape
What you use A tobacco plug in a sealed stick Cut tobacco in paper A nicotine e-liquid
How it works Heated by induction inside the device Lit with a flame Heated by a battery-powered coil
Length of use Fixed: up to 6 minutes or 14 puffs Until you put it out Puff by puff until the liquid or battery runs out
What else you need A charged ILUMA device A lighter Nothing, it comes pre-filled
What is left A used stick to throw away A butt and ash The whole device when it is empty

The choice between them is about format and taste. All three contain nicotine, which is addictive, and none of them is risk free.

Which devices use TEREA sticks?

Every device in the ILUMA family takes TEREA and nothing else. In the UAE today that mostly means the three ILUMA i models:

  • ILUMA i ONE: an all-in-one, pen-style device that you charge directly, with up to 20 sessions back to back. AED 170 in our shop at the time of writing (November 2026).
  • ILUMA i: often called ILUMA i Standard, a holder with a touch screen plus a pocket charger, with Pause Mode and up to 3 sessions in a row. AED 250 at the time of writing.
  • ILUMA i PRIME: the same features as ILUMA i in a premium design. AED 359 at the time of writing.

All three use the same SMARTCORE induction heating, so your choice is about size, charging and features rather than the stick. You can see current models and limited editions in our IQOS ILUMA i devices category. The first-generation ILUMA, ILUMA ONE and ILUMA PRIME also take TEREA, so an older ILUMA you already own is fine.

TEREA flavour families

TEREA flavours fall into four broad families. Names change from market to market, so the family tells you more than the name on the pack.

  • Tobacco, no menthol: roasted, woody or rich blends such as Amber, Silver, Sienna, Bronze and Teak, plus the Japanese Regular line (Regular, Rich Regular, Smooth Regular and others).
  • Menthol: cool blends that range from light to ice-cold, such as Turquoise, Green, Purple Wave, Blue Wave and the Japanese Black Menthol line.
  • Pearl capsule: sticks with a capsule in the filter that you click to change the taste during the session, such as Sun Pearl, Oasis Pearl and Twilight Pearl.
  • Regional editions: blends sold in one market only, such as the Indonesian Golden Edition with its clove aroma, and the TEREA Dimensions blends Yugen and Apricity.

Strength is published on two different scales. Most IQOS markets rate intensity from 1 to 10 (Amber is 6, Bronze is 8, Turquoise is 4), while IQOS Japan rates taste strength from 1 to 5 (Rich Regular is 5, Balanced Regular is 3). A Japanese 4 and an international 4 are not the same thing.

Our TEREA flavour guide describes every flavour with its official taste notes, and the TEREA strength guide ranks them from light to strong on both scales.

TEREA country versions in Dubai

PMI makes TEREA for many markets, and each market gets its own flavour list, pack language and price. Shops in Dubai sell several of these versions side by side, which is why you see the same flavour name on packs from Japan, Indonesia or Uzbekistan. Every version is the same SMARTCORE stick, so all of them work in any ILUMA device.

Version Flavours we stock Box of 10 packs (November 2026) Known for
Japan 24 AED 230 The widest range, the Regular line and the Black menthols
Indonesia 12 AED 120–125 Golden Edition, Yugen, Apricity and Black Green, which no other version we stock has
Italy 8 AED 180 Menthol and Pearl names with “Menthol” added, such as Turquoise Menthol
Switzerland 8 AED 160 European classics plus Teak and Bronze
Kyrgyzstan 9 AED 130 Classics plus Provence Pearl and Green Zing
Tajikistan 6 AED 125–130 Classics plus Tidal Pearl and Twilight Pearl
Uzbekistan 10 AED 125–130 Classics plus Summer Wave and Zing Wave

Prices in the table are our box prices at the time of writing; check TEREA prices in Dubai for today’s figures. Some flavours are spread across many versions: in our shop Purple Wave comes from six markets and Sun Pearl from five. A shared name does not always mean an identical blend, because IQOS writes the official description separately for each market. Our TEREA country versions guide goes through each version flavour by flavour.

How to choose your first box in the UAE

TEREA is sold in packs of 20 and boxes of 10 packs, and the prices on our site are per box. If you are new to it, four quick decisions narrow 77 products down to two or three:

  1. Check your device. If it says ILUMA on the device or the box, it takes TEREA. If you can see a thin blade inside the holder, it is an older IQOS and needs HEETS.
  2. Pick a family: tobacco, menthol or Pearl capsule.
  3. Pick a strength, using the scale for that version (1-5 for Japan, 1-10 elsewhere).
  4. Pick a version by range and budget: Japan for the widest choice, Indonesia for blends no other version has, Central Asia for the classics at the lowest box price at the time of writing.

On storage, the IQOS UAE self-diagnosis page for the first-generation ILUMA lists very humid or very dry storage among the things to check when a stick gives a poor experience, so keep your packs at normal room conditions.

We deliver in 1-2 hours in Dubai, with cash or card on delivery, and delivery is free on orders over AED 400 (AED 40 below that). You can browse all TEREA sticks by country and flavour, and our TEREA Souq FAQ answers questions about payment, orders and returns. Sales are for adults 18 and over only.

Frequently asked questions

Is TEREA the same as HEETS?

No. HEETS are made for older IQOS devices that heat the tobacco with a blade. TEREA has a metal element inside and is made only for ILUMA devices. An ILUMA cannot heat HEETS, and IQOS warns that TEREA may damage the blade of an older device.

How long does one TEREA stick last?

Up to 6 minutes or 14 puffs, whichever comes first, according to IQOS. On ILUMA i devices FlexPuff can add 4 extra puffs, still inside the 6 minutes, depending on how you puff.

Can I reuse a TEREA stick?

No. IQOS states that TEREA sticks are single use. Once a session ends, throw the stick away and start the next one with a fresh stick.

Does Japanese or Indonesian TEREA work in an ILUMA i bought in Dubai?

Yes. The country version changes the flavour list, the pack and the price, but not the stick format, so any TEREA version works in any ILUMA or ILUMA i device, wherever you bought it.

How many sticks are in a TEREA box?

A box, also called a carton, holds 10 packs of 20 sticks, which is 200 sticks in total. The IQOS Egypt FAQ gives the same figures: 20 sticks per pack and 200 sticks in a bundle of 10 packs.

For adults 18+ only. Tobacco and nicotine products are addictive and not risk free.
