Your First TEREA Carton: How to Choose Without Wasting Money

A simple decision tree for your first TEREA box: pick a taste family, a strength on the right scale and a country version, then three concrete picks.

TEREA Silver, Turquoise and Sun Pearl packs for a first carton
In this guide

The best TEREA for beginners is a light-to-medium blend in the taste family you already enjoy: Silver or Yellow for plain tobacco, Turquoise or Green for menthol, and Sun Pearl if you are curious about capsules. Start with one box from a lower-priced country version, and move up the strength scale only once you know what suits you.

This guide turns that advice into a simple decision tree: three taste families, three strength levels and seven country versions, ending with three concrete first boxes. Every taste note and strength number comes from official IQOS pages, and every price is our own at the time of writing (November 2026).

Three decisions before your first box

Three choices decide whether a first carton suits you. Make them in this order:

  1. Taste family: plain tobacco, menthol, or a Pearl capsule that changes the taste during the session.
  2. Strength: light, medium or strong, read on the right scale for the version you buy.
  3. Country version: the same idea at a box price between AED 120 and AED 230 in our shop.

If you do not own a device yet, start with our guide to what TEREA is and how it works. TEREA works only in IQOS ILUMA and ILUMA i devices, so the device comes first.

Step 1: choose a taste family

The family tells you more than the name on the pack. IQOS sells similar tastes under different names in different markets, so decide on the family first and the name second.

Family What it tastes like Names to look for Pick it if
Tobacco Toasted or roasted tobacco, from delicate and herbal to rich with cocoa or malt notes; no menthol Silver, Yellow, Amber, Sienna, Teak, Bronze; the Regular line in Japan You want a plain tobacco taste with nothing cooling
Menthol Tobacco with a cooling feel, from crisp and light to ice-cold, sometimes with a fruit aroma Turquoise, Green, Purple Wave, Blue Wave; Menthol, Mint and the Black line in Japan You like a fresh, cool taste in every puff
Pearl capsule One taste before you click the filter and a second, usually cool and fruity, after it Sun Pearl, Oasis Pearl, Tidal Pearl, Twilight Pearl, Riviera Pearl You cannot decide between tobacco and menthol, or you like variety

Pearl is a sensible middle ground when you are unsure, because many Pearl blends start as tobacco and turn cool only after the click. IQOS describes the international Sun Pearl as balanced toasted tobacco with a subtle spicy and herbal aroma before the click, and cooling menthol with watermelon after it. Check the version, though: the Japanese and Indonesian Sun Pearl are described differently, and the Japanese one is menthol from the first puff.

Step 2: choose a strength, on the right scale

IQOS publishes strength on two different scales, and mixing them up is the easiest way to buy a box that is stronger than you expected. Most markets use an intensity scale from 1 to 10. IQOS Japan uses a taste-strength scale from 1 to 5, with separate bars for body, aroma and menthol feel.

  • International 1-10 scale: Silver and Turquoise are rated 4, Yellow and Green 5, Amber 6, Sienna and Teak 7, and Bronze 8. These are IQOS UAE’s ratings for its own packs (Amber and Green: IQOS UK); our country versions share the names, so the same ratings are likely, not confirmed.
  • Japanese 1-5 scale: Balanced Regular, Warm Regular, Menthol and Mint are rated 3; Regular, Smooth Regular and most of the fruity menthols 4; Rich Regular 5.

Nothing in the Japanese range we stock is rated below 3, so a Japanese 3 is the light end of that range, not a weak stick by international standards. For a first box, a 4 or 5 out of 10, or a 3 out of 5, is a sensible place to start. Our TEREA strength guide ranks every flavour on both scales.

Menthol is a separate feeling

Coolness and strength are not the same thing. Japan rates them on separate bars: Black Menthol has a taste strength of 4 but a menthol feel of 5, the top of the scale. If you are new to menthol, start with a crisp blend such as Turquoise rather than the ice-cold Black line.

The decision tree: best TEREA for beginners by family and strength

Put the two choices together and you get a grid of nine cells. Each cell lists flavours we stock, with the official rating where IQOS publishes one; the 1-10 ratings, apart from Blue Wave’s Indonesian one, come from IQOS UAE, UK and South Africa packs, so for ours they are likely, not confirmed. For a first box, stay in the light or medium column.

Family Light Medium Strong
Tobacco Silver (4/10), Yellow (5/10) Amber (6/10), Sienna and Teak (7/10), Balanced Regular and Warm Regular (3/5) Bronze (8/10), Regular and Smooth Regular (4/5), Rich Regular (5/5)
Menthol Turquoise (4/10), Green (5/10) Blue Wave (7/10), Menthol and Mint (3/5) Purple Menthol (4/5), the Black line (taste 4/5, menthol 5/5)
Pearl capsule None of our Pearls is officially rated light Tidal Pearl (6/10), Japanese Oasis Pearl (3/5) Japanese Sun Pearl and Riviera Pearl (4/5)

Ratings for the Pearl family are thin. In the sources we use, IQOS gives no intensity number for the international Sun Pearl, Oasis Pearl or Twilight Pearl, so they are not placed in a column. Their official descriptions start with balanced tobacco before the click, which is why we still treat them as beginner-friendly.

The short version of the grid:

  • Tobacco, first box: Silver, or Amber if you want a fuller taste.
  • Menthol, first box: Turquoise, or Green if you prefer a spearmint note.
  • Capsule, first box: Sun Pearl from Kyrgyzstan or Uzbekistan, or Tidal Pearl.

Step 3: choose a country version by budget

Every country version uses the same stick format and works in every ILUMA and ILUMA i device. What changes is the flavour list, the pack and the price. These are our box prices at the time of writing (November 2026):

Version Box of 10 packs Per stick First-box flavours we stock
Kyrgyzstan AED 130 About AED 0.65 Silver, Yellow, Turquoise, Amber, Sun Pearl
Uzbekistan AED 125–130 About AED 0.63–0.65 Silver, Yellow, Turquoise, Amber, Sun Pearl, Tidal Pearl
Tajikistan AED 125–130 About AED 0.63–0.65 Silver, Turquoise, Amber, Tidal Pearl
Indonesia AED 120–125 About AED 0.60–0.63 Green, Sienna, Sun Pearl
Switzerland AED 160 About AED 0.80 Silver, Yellow, Turquoise, Amber
Italy AED 180 About AED 0.90 Silver, Amber, Turquoise Menthol
Japan AED 230 About AED 1.15 Balanced Regular, Warm Regular, Menthol, Mint, Oasis Pearl

A Japanese box costs AED 100 to 110 more than a box from Central Asia or Indonesia. Japan is worth it when you want something only Japan makes, such as the Regular tobacco line or a named fruit in a Pearl. As a way of finding your taste, it is the most expensive option in our shop.

One caution on shared names: IQOS writes taste notes separately for each market, so the same name in two versions is a reasonable bet, not a guarantee of the same blend. When a flavour name appears in several versions, read the description on the product page for the version you are buying.

Three first boxes we would suggest

If you want a short answer, these three cover the three families at the lighter end and cost AED 130 each at the time of writing. They are suggestions based on the official ratings above, not a sales ranking.

  • TEREA Silver Kyrgyzstan: tobacco, no menthol. IQOS describes Silver as a balanced, refined toasted tobacco taste with a subtle spicy and herbal aroma; IQOS UAE rates its own Silver 4 out of 10 (likely, not confirmed for this pack).
  • TEREA Turquoise Kyrgyzstan: menthol. Toasted tobacco with crisp menthol freshness and a subtle zesty, citrus-like touch, also 4 out of 10 on IQOS UAE’s rating (likely, not confirmed for this pack).
  • TEREA Sun Pearl Kyrgyzstan: capsule. Balanced toasted tobacco before the click and cooling menthol with exotic fruit after it, according to the IQOS Kazakhstan description of this blend.

Prefer a fuller tobacco taste from the start? Amber, at intensity 6, is the next step up from Silver on the scale. Want menthol with a minty note instead of citrus? Green, at 5, sits one step above Turquoise (IQOS UK figures for Amber and Green, likely, not confirmed for our packs).

How not to waste your first carton

  • Buy one box, not three. A box holds 10 packs, or 200 sticks, which is plenty to judge a flavour before you commit to more.
  • Change one thing at a time. If your first box is close but not right, move one step on the strength scale or switch family, not both, so you learn what made the difference.
  • Taste both halves of a Pearl. IQOS describes one taste before the click and another after it, so judge the stick as a whole.
  • Compare like with like. Read Japanese flavours on the Japanese 1-5 scale and international flavours on the 1-10 scale.
  • Leave the top of the range for later. Bronze, Rich Regular and the Black menthols sit at the strong end of their ranges and make a better second or third box.

What to check on a product page before you order

A product page answers most first-box questions if you know where to look. Before you add a box to your cart, check these five things:

  1. The family: does the description mention menthol, a capsule, or neither?
  2. The number and its scale: an intensity out of 10, or a Japanese rating out of 5.
  3. The click: for a Pearl, what IQOS says the stick tastes like before and after the capsule.
  4. The version: the country in the product name, because the same flavour name can carry a different description in another market.
  5. The unit: our prices are per box of 10 packs, not per pack.

If a page leaves one of these open, for example a Pearl with no published rating, treat it as a medium choice until you have tried it.

After your first box: moving up or across

Once you know where you sit on the grid, the next choice is easy. If the first box felt too mild, move one column to the right in the same family: Silver to Amber, or Amber to Sienna. If it felt right but you want variety, stay in the same column and change family, for example from Silver to Turquoise or to a Pearl. Our TEREA flavour guide lists every flavour with its official taste notes, which helps when one cell holds several names.

Frequently asked questions

What is the lightest TEREA?

On the international 1-10 scale, the lightest flavours we stock are Silver and Turquoise, both rated 4 by IQOS UAE for its own packs (likely, not confirmed for ours). In the Japanese range the lowest rating is 3 out of 5, shared by Balanced Regular, Warm Regular, Menthol, Mint and Oasis Pearl, among others.

Are menthol TEREA flavours stronger than tobacco ones?

Not as a rule. IQOS UAE rates its Turquoise, a menthol, 4 out of 10, the same as Silver, and its Bronze, a tobacco blend, 8 (likely, not confirmed for our packs). Menthol adds a cooling feel that IQOS Japan rates on its own bar, separate from taste strength.

Should my first TEREA be Japanese?

Only if you want something that only Japan makes, such as the Regular line or a named fruit in a Pearl. Japan is the most expensive version in our shop, at AED 230 a box at the time of writing against AED 120 to 130 for four other versions.

Is a Pearl capsule a good first choice?

It can be, especially if you cannot choose between tobacco and menthol. Several Pearl blends, such as the international Sun Pearl and Tidal Pearl, taste of tobacco until you click the filter and then turn cool, so one box shows you both sides.

For adults 18+ only. Tobacco and nicotine products are addictive and not risk free.
